The only repros I've seen being sold are the taller style of covers. Did someone finally make the older lower style of cover?

Tough to find a good one and I don't think anyone has re-popped the old style covers.

Most of the older kart engine covers hardened up and same with the chain saws except for one. I have picked up 5 or 6 Mac15 chainsaws for misc parts and every one had a soft pliable plug boots that cleaned up like new. They must have used a long lasting material for some run of the covers. Unfortunately I have used all the ones I got from the saws.

I have experimented with softening up a hardened cover. The only thing that I have found that works well is soaking it in Acetone for a couple hours. It also makes the cover swell so keep checking it. It comes out very soft and nice, unfortunately after a few days it returns to the hardened state and I have not found anything that will keep it soft. I even tried vacuum impregnating one with silicone oil and one with WD40 but it didn't help, still gets hard.

Maybe one of you vintage karters could suggest something that would re-incorporate the elastiscizers in the boot material?? Anybody have any ideas?

I found this link to a forum that talks about softening rubber carb boots and other parts. It may be worth trying this method. They used Xylene and wintergreen oil and claimed it was successful for their application.

I use wintergreen oil quite a lot and have some but not enough to make the solution but I will get some more. I never thought of trying that. There is a caution for the wintergreen oil though, it is a solvent that does attack plastics and paint in the liquid form so I will test the boot against the cover paint before I attempt to use it. It is also highly poisonous and smells great....a bad combination when around kids so anyone using it should be careful not to leave it where kids can get hold of it.
Great thing to try, I will report back after I get some more wintergreen.

Might want to try some Trinity Zip Grip. Hard on lexan slot car body's but it does soften the tires. It has wintergreen in it.

Google on the "Rubber Renue". It's commercially available and ready to use. Now, who has a nice boot they'll sell me? TJ
