gasket material

Post by ted johnson » Wed Apr 08, 2009 2:11 pm

Anyone have any thoughts as to a good alky/gasoline proof .031 flexible gasket paper? The stuff McMaster Carr had was too stiff, and the stuff I got from the auto shop was only .016 thick. I want to try water jet cutting some pieces. Thanks. Ted

Good morning, Bo. I haven't done much more digging, as getting my weird Mc-101/Mc-20 clone built is priority No. 1. Ron C. had some good gaskets, so that took the edge off looking! Summit has fiber material in .031, and I will order a sheet to look at it. Also want to look at Mr. Gasket. Thanks, Ted

in my days of racing in ohio, i always cut gaskets and went thru napa but i can't quote part numbers, but curr down here, i go to auto zone or advanced auto parts and so far(incl barnesville-09), no prob. the gray material, quote 'part no. 3157 rubber-fiber 10" x 26" x 1/32" for sealing oil, water, or gasoline' rick chapman(from ohio) runs alky and agn, i understand no prob.. the 1/32' is a tad light for intake manifold to block but they seal, just don't suggest to reuse as i know i used to. i've also used the tan material(part # torn off). i just use patty's cutting board and trace from originals. does take time epecially the intake and reed but i'm kinda retired. hope it helps...butch

Thanks, Butch. Auto Zone down the street! I like the rubber-fiber stuff. Don't need thicker gaskets as manifold-to-block and stuffer gaskets are easy to find, but I don't like the stiffness of most Mac reed-to-manifold gaskets. A lot of them break when I'm putting in the semi-circle cut for the Mikuni pulse hole. Also, a lot of the 34mm flange gaskets are crappy, so I want to cut my own. Ted

ted, been since april. how did you ever come out on your gaskets..just purchased another roll today..i use a scribe for the circle or venturi area..trial and error in which side of the pen mark..a small sharp pair of scissors to trim is helpfull..the pulse and stud holes, i purchased some different diameter hole punches at jo-ann fabrics or the like...it does take some time to cut gaskets but i can't go to the beach everyday here in fla...butch

Hey, Butch. Where do you live in Fla.? I was born and lived in Brevard Co. until '83, then on and off until I finally left for good in '01.
I got gasket material from Auto Zone. I found I can sandwich the stock between 2 thin Masonite sheets and waterjet a bunch at the same time. I also bought a bunch of gaskets from LAD Specialties, and they're great quality. They also have lots of hard-to-find gaskets. I recommend them highly. TJ

port charlotte. punta gorda is our county seat, you might remember the weather channel 08/13/04, hurricanne charlie. cat 4, eye of storm 13 miles in width, small but much damage..at night we enjoyed looking at the stars where our roof used to be..we have a stock car track here in charlotte county..karts run fri nite but no vintage interest and turnouts are low..when you search 'karting in fla' it's still popular just that modern karting in not for me..moved here from akron ohio 1993 but was very lucky to have raced in the 1960's (think dart kart speedway). ohio back then was a very popular state for racing....companies like lad gasket and others(too many to mention) have sure helped the vintage karter and we all appreciate them..now if i could only find and old 65 grand prix on craig's list for $100.00..butch
